Favorite Things Friday: Fisher Space Pen
I can hear the teasing already… You’re writing about a Space Pen? Are you a 13 year-old boy? Who get’s excited about a pen? Well, I’m going to tell you…the Space Pen is awesome! The Fisher Space Pen is one of my favorite productivity tools and I carry it with me every day.
I have carried a Space Pen in my pocket for about two years now. As much as I enjoy technology, I still enjoy scribbling notes, sketching out ideas and drawing things for our girls on paper. Also, being married to a germaphobe has turned me into a bit of germ freak myself, so I just use my own pen instead of the pen on the chain at the bank or the DMV.
Why do I like the Space Pen?
It’s compact. I carry the bullet style pen so it is rounded and only 3.75″ in length. Open it up and it is just over 5″ long which is a perfect length for a pen. The best part of carrying this pen is that I don’t feel it. Guys have to carry a lot of stuff in their pockets and the pen is so compact that I don’t feel it in my pocket.
It feels good. The pen is made of brass so it has a nice heft in your hand. It’s not heavy, it just feels firm and sturdy when compared to plastic pens. I carry the matte black pen and the finish has a nice texture that wears well in the abusive environment of my pocket. The matte finish also makes the pen easy to grip.
It doesn’t leak. I’m not sure why, but pens like to leak in my pockets. I have lost 2 or 3 shirts and 2 or 3 pairs of pants to leaky pens. I haven’t had a problem with my Space Pen leaking on me.
It always works. I have never had a problem with my Space Pen. I’m actually on my second pen since the first one turned up missing after about a year. The pen always writes and I have yet to wear out an ink cartridge.
The Space Pen is well known for some of the crazy extremes it can write in. Fisher says that the pen can write at any angle, in extreme hot or cold and even underwater. I’ve only tested the angle factor and it passed.
The Space Pen is not cheap. They sell for $18 on Amazon, which seems to be the lowest price. I saw my pen in a local office supply store the other day and it was $33. Even at $18 this pen is much less expensive than a formal pen that many people might purchase.
For quite a while I have been thinking it would be great if they could put a stylus tip on the end of the bullet pen lid so it could be used on the iPad. While I was writing this article I discovered that the geniuses at Fisher have already made my idea a reality! They have the black bullet pen I like with a stylus tip that can be used on my iPad. I carry a stylus in my work bag for the iPad for certain applications, it would be great if it were always in my pocket. My only concern would be the longevity of the rubber tip on the stylus in my pocket. It’s certainly worth a try…I know what will be on my birthday list next month. You might want to check out www.spacepen.com they have a ton of neat pens and personalization options. The Fisher Space Pen Facebook page is also pretty neat with some behind the scenes images.
A bit of a bonus for this Favorite Things Friday. I came across this video on Lifehacker.com last week. Adam Savage, co-host of Mythbusters, emptied his pockets for the “Every Day Carry” feature on Tested. Guess what Adam Savage carries in his pocket…

As always, Favorite Things Friday features an item I have purchased with my own money, unless otherwise noted. A link to the Fisher Space Pen is in my Amazon Store in the right sidebar. If you buy it through my link I get a little cut of the action which helps pay for this site.

5 inches seems like it would be rather short. And I try to avoid putting things in my pockets that are light and small enough to not get noticed. That’s a good way of getting them washed, like I did with 3 different bluetooth headsets.
There is good news Edward…since the pen is waterproof it makes it through the washer just fine. I’ve washed it one time with no trouble. Most of the time it comes right on out with my keys. Washing bluetooth headsets could expensive quickly 🙂
I’ll take that into account, although 5 inches still feels awfully short to me.
Washing bluetooth headsets is pretty expensive, even if you buy the budget model!
