How Much Does It Cost To Mow The Lawn? — 14 Comments

  1. When you mow it yourself you also are a lot more aware of what is going on in your yard. For example: what areas need weed treating or extra water, unwanted hornet nests on the side of the house or barn/shop you don’t normally frequent, mole holes, neighbor’s newspapers thrown over the fence, snakes, stray beer bottles, rat nests, etc.

    • So is this a good thing or a bad thing Ted? Finding hornets and snakes doesn’t sound like too much fun when out mowing. Of course the scorpion that landed on me today while mowing wasn’t much fun either.

  2. You are right that lawn mower prices are rediculous. Even a new reel mower, which has no engine, costs over $100.
At my last place, my yard was positively tiny. So I got a used reel mower off of Craigslist for $10. Took me about 15 minutes to mow the lawn. This place, the lawn is about 4 times the size. Luckily, it came with a gas-powered push mower as well.

    • I have a friend that uses a reel mower and he says people stare at him all the time 🙂
Sounds like it worked out well to have the mower included with the new place.

      • A reel cutter does a better job cutting. It gives the grass a manicured look. It’s great for small lawns.

  3. Interesting comparison – we mowed ourselves at our last house, but plan on having someone do the work at the new home. Our thought is that we have so many other things to keep us busy that it’ll be worth the expense. Maybe we’ll take it back over one day – but mowing in the Texas summer sun isn’t my idea of fun! 3 acres is quite a challenge – my hat’s off to you!

    • Thanks AB! I didn’t go too deep into the cost/benefit of hiring someone to mow your lawn, but it’s definitely worth it for a good number of people. There are definitely a lot of things that can be better done with that time and you are helping to provide a living for someone else when you hire out the work.

      • Oh, it’s probably worth it for us too… 🙂 but it’s one of those luxuries that I’ll be including in the future budget that will fall under my “makes life better” category. Although the setup you’ve got with the headset is pretty sweet!!

        • I do like the headset AB! Today would be one of those days worth paying someone to mow. 90 degrees outside with 90% humidity. Yikes!

  6. Thank you for the time to make the calculations. They’re certainly in the right ballpark.
I mowed my 1 + acre, (hilly throughout, necessitating getting on and off and using a push mower as well.) for 20 years. It’s about a 2 hour job.
Last year I tired of it and hired a lawn contractor. This year the bill was over $1000.00, so I’m considering getting a new rider and pusher, and starting again. Previous tractor was a Craftsman, lasted nearly 20 years with occasional work on it. Thanks again.

  8. My husband and I enjoyed that so much I wanted to write even if just to thank you.

We moved onto an acre on a private farm this past May. It’s been great. This year we have been using a self propelled gas mower that has seen better days. We’ve been taking turns mowing every weekend. Next year we plan to get a riding mower. We are hoping to score a deal like yours before next spring. Right now the job takes about 2.5 hours. We are expecting it to go down to about 1.

We also enjoy mowing for all of the qualities you mentioned. We also have kids and busy lives and careers and it can be nice to have that time to do something for yourself, like learn as you mentioned, or even just decompress from a hectic lifestyle.

The calculations were fun and easy and best of all, helpful. Again, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.
