Favorite Things Friday: Money!
Who doesn’t like money? It’s one of those things that people are always interested in and want more of. I know a lot of you are thinking, “Oh no! The preacher is talking about money.” Well don’t worry my friends, I won’t be selling you any prayer cloths. (The only cloths I have to sell are diaper cloths and no one wants those.) There’s nothing wrong or evil about money. Now the love of money (greed)…that’s a different story.
So here it comes, now that I have you thinking about money I’m going to pull the ol’ switcharoo on you. Money is great and it is one of my favorite things. What I like even better is learning new ways to make sure I’m spending, saving and using my money wisely. That’s why I read a ton of personal finance blogs. Today I’m going to share some blogs that I read that help me save my money and make it grow. Maybe you’ll enjoy some of these sites too…
Get Rich Slowly (GetRichSlowly.org)
GRS is the first blog I ever subscribed to. Back then it was owned by J.D. Roth who posted several times a day about personal money management. After several years GRS built a large following and eventually J.D. Roth sold the site for a handsome sum and is now traveling the world, among other pursuits.
GRS is a mega-site with staff writers posting new content about a variety of financial topics. Just the other day there was a great post about examining why budgets fail. If you have any question about personal finance, you can search this site and find a solid answer. I refer a lot of people to this site when they have questions about managing their money.
Making Sense of Cents (MakingSenseofCents.com)
Reading posts on Making Sense of Cents is probably what pushed me to go ahead and start my own blog. Michelle runs the site, and up until a few months ago she blogged anonymously. Meaning she didn’t tell friends, family, co-workers, etc. that she wrote a blog. This allowed her a lot of freedom in speaking openly with actual figures about personal finance and income figures from the blog.
Michelle’s blog is a side job. Somehow she manages to work a full-time job and run Making Sense of Cents on the side. I’m not sure how much longer she will work her day job since her blog is generating more money each month than many full-time jobs pay. She made almost $8K in extra income in April! She is a master of keeping up with the social media side of her blog as well.
I like the variety of material that is posted on MakingSenseofCents.com. The approach of the site is not extreme frugality like some personal finance sites. You won’t find Michelle washing out ziploc bags to reuse them. The focus is on responsible budgeting, spending and saving based on income…while enjoying life somewhat responsibly.
Edward Antrobus (EdwardAntrobus.com)
Every blog has it’s own ‘flavor’ and that comes from the author. I’ve really enjoyed Edward’s take in the posts that he writes. As an example, this recent post on fighting fraudulent charges on a credit card was very informative. Edward, like most personal finance bloggers, posts net worth updates about his personal financial journey. I appreciate every blogger that honestly shares the successes and failures they have had from month to month.
Another thing I appreciate about Edward is his frequent comments on my site. He always brings additional insight or information to the discussion. I have enjoyed ‘meeting’ and interacting with a variety of people through the blogs that I follow.
Aspiring Blogger (AspiringBlogger.com)
Aspiring Blogger is another anonymous blog. This one is so anonymous that the author simply goes by AB. I’ve even exchanged emails back and forth with AB on various topics and I couldn’t tell you what his name is. This man of mystery does a good job of writing a blog about the financial decisions in his life.
I appreciate that AB is honest and open about his successes and failures. He writes about everything from buying a house, to issues at work, and a bit about the challenges of writing a blog. AB posts once a week and I always look forward to his new posts.
There’s something for everyone…
No one can blame poor financial decisions on lack of knowledge these days. There are literally thousands of personal finance bloggers who are giving away their advice, experience and lessons learned. I have several other personal finance blogs in my RSS reader, but these four are the ones I enjoy the most. I haven’t been compensated by any of these blogs or their authors. Just wanted to share some great resources that I have been enjoying. Maybe you’ll learn some new ways to hold onto a bit more of that money that we all enjoy.

I’m honored that I made your top 4 list. You commented on my blog on that post about a penny saved is a penny earned and you stuck around after that, so I figured I should add you to my “Read Daily” bookmark folder. 🙂
Hey Jon, thanks for including me in this awesome list! I am truly honored. I have been a reader of GRS and Making Cents of Cents for a long time, but I haven’t heard of Edward Antrobus until now – I’ll definitely check it out! Keep up the great work!
