Luck is a Thief
A quick thought for today…
How many times a day do you use the word luck? Think about it for a second. We wish people good luck as they are departing on a trip or other venture. Other times we might say that we were really lucky to accomplish something. Sometimes we even use the word sarcastically when we tell someone, “good luck with that.” I think the word luck is a thief.
In his latest book, Jon Acuff writes, “Luck is a word people who are lazy use to describe people who are hustling. If you ever taste it in your mouth, spit it out as fast as you can.” Many times we aren’t lucky, we have worked to get ourselves in the right place at the right time. We have built knowledge and life experience that allow us to fully utilize the opportunities we have. The leaders of industry weren’t lucky, they worked day and night to get where they are. When we attribute our success to luck, we allow the credit for our hard work to be stolen by a word.
You’re probably thinking, “How do I explain the successes that I didn’t earn?” Many times we credit luck for our success when we should be crediting God. A vast majority of the population prays to God and then gives the credit for answered prayers to luck. We have allowed luck to steal the credit that belongs to God.
Today (in the United States) is Memorial Day. We pay tribute to the men and women who have given their lives to protect the freedoms that we enjoy. We don’t attribute our freedoms to luck, we clearly recognize that there was a high price paid for what we enjoy and give honor and credit where it is due.
We all have things that we want to accomplish and visions for our life. As I wrap this up, let me leave you with another quote from Jon Acuff’s book “Start”…
“A dream you don’t have to fight for isn’t a dream—it’s a nap. And while naps are delightful and enjoyed best on Sunday afternoon, they do very little to move you closer to awesome. A nap changes your afternoon. Awesome changes your world.”
As you can probably tell, I have really enjoyed “Start” by Jon Acuff. Today is the last day to register to win a copy of the book. Tomorrow I will giveaway a copy of the book to three different winners. Click here for your chance to win.
I remember wishing a friend good luck for a job interview once and getting a lecture in return that there is no such thing as good luck, only God’s will.
