Favorite Things Friday: Field Notes
After a few weeks of tech heavy favorites I thought it was time for a low-tech favorite that I carry with me every day. I have already written about my Fisher Space Pen that I carry in my right pocket every day. When I was writing that post I saw that Adam Savage from Mythbusters carries Field Notes brand notebooks. In April I ordered a pack of the notebooks from Amazon and they are now one of my Favorite Things and a huge help in productivity and organization.
Many times when I need to jot down a note I will either input the data into Evernote on my phone, but more than often I will grab a scrap of paper and scribble the note on it and jam it in my pocket. That’s a huge problem! Scraps of paper get lost, thrown away or run through the washing machine very easily. Now I whip out my Field Notes pocket notebook and jot the information down quickly and put it away.
I carry my Field Notes notebook in my left back pocket. It is the perfect size to fit into my pocket and it is so thin that is hardly noticeable. The durable cover of the notebook made it through 3 months of summer use in my back pocket. The grid lined pages lend themselves to writing and drawing scaled sketches of projects.
Last week I accidentally washed the Field Notes notebook that I have been carrying since April. I was bummed because I had lots of notes I wanted to keep. The notebook was in a tight wad in the back pocket of some shorts I had been working in. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I unfolded the notebook and was able to open it. I was shocked when I opened the pages and could still read all of my notes. It might not have been pretty but the information was still there. As it has dried out my notes have become even more legible.
The Field Notes I carry are a special boxed set celebrating agriculture in the United States. Each notebook in the “National Crop” series features a different crop and interesting data and facts about it. There is also a handy ruler in each notebook cover. The next batch of Field Notes I order will be the expedition series that is waterproof and tearproof…perfect for the washing machine. Field Notes cost about $3-$4 each which is a fair price for a quality product made in the USA.
You might want to check out the write up I did about my Fisher Space Pen which is the perfect companion to the Field Notes. Also, this month Geocaching.com is organizing 31 finds in 31 days. I use my Field Notes to jot down information about Geocaches that I find so I can come back and give it another try or log my find on the site when I get home. Check out my write up on Geocaching and get out and give it a try.
Bonus, the Adam Savage every day carry video:

Have a great weekend! And remember…sharing is caring 🙂
Jon, I’ve never heard of Field Notes, until now. I’m intrigued. I just ordered a 3-pack of the bright orange Expedition Edition Virtually Indestructible Field Notes, and am anxious to try them out. Thanks for the info. I really enjoy your blog, and I’ve found your Favorite Things Friday posts to be especially informative.
