The Value of a Second Opinion — 2 Comments

  1. We had a similar experience with a fancy pediatric dentist office. When they set me down to talk about financing these 5 fillings, I told them I’d have to think about it…and quickly went home and made an appointment with my childhood dentist! The five fillings became one, and we learned our lesson well.

  2. A good source of 2nd opinions (first ones, too, for that matter) for services and vendors/crastsmen is Angie’s List. They are an internet site that charges a small membership fee and in exchange, you get first-hand reviews of different vendors in your area and 100% of the reviews come from your fellow subscribers and yourself. They have reviews written by people in your own neighborhood about doctors/dentists/mechanics/plumbers/carpenters/pest control companies, etc., from YOUR town.

A wonderful 2nd opinion tool for products is Amazon. It doesn’t make any difference what you are looking for, it will be sold at Amazon and there will be reviews by individuals who have purchased it before. They eve put a star rating right at the top of the page for each item (1-5 stars with 5 stars being perfect). Sometimes reviews here can be skewed slightly because I have heard of some sellers hiring ghost reviewers to give their products good reviews. However, if you make sure there are more than a dozen reviews (some items have HUNDREDS of reviews) on a given item, you can pretty well bet that they are legit just because of the sheer number of reviews.
